What is an ICI sheet metal worker?
The Sheet Metal Worker builds and installs ductwork for air handling systems.
As a Sheet Metal Worker, the career involves shearing, forming, fabricating, welding, soldering and assembling a host of items made from galvanized iron, sheet steel, copper, nickel alloy, stainless steel, aluminum and sometimes plastic. Some products that Sheet Metal Workers manufacture include, but are not limited to, filing cabinets and desks, kitchen equipment, metal roofs, siding, rain gutters, downspouts, skylights, customized precision equipment, and many other products made from metal sheets. They also work in the production of spiral seam pipe air-conditioning and ventilation systems, shielded rooms to keep out sound or magnetism, and the ducting for computer rooms where humidity and temperature control are essential. As well as many other items. Others work in industrial plants, ie. automotive, food, pharmaceutical, nuclear, chemical. Some work at commercial sites, i.e. retail stores, restaurants, office buildings. Still others work in the institution sector, i.e. schools, long term care, hospitals. There are applications for Sheet Metal Workers in every construction site. To work as a sheet metal worker in Ontario, you must be: a) the holder of a Certificate of Qualification, issued by the Government. This certificate states that they have passed the provincial qualification exam that assesses their knowledge of their skilled trade.

b) registered as an apprentice sheet metal worker. These two categories are the only people allowed to work at the Trade of Sheet Metal in the Province of Ontario. Anyone working at the trade and not having one of the above qualifications is in violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act as well as the TQAA. The trade of Sheet Metal work encompasses many different aspects. It is challenging work that can be different each day. There is a sense of pride when we see our work completed knowing that our skills are needed to make the building habitable. If you wish to train to become qualified as a sheet metal worker in Ontario, you must: a) have completed grade 10 ( as the trade is very math intensive grade 12 is highly recommended, those with less then grade 12 may have great difficulty passing the C of Q exam). b) enter into an agreement with a suitable employer; c) register with the province; d) complete 9000 hours of work experience which includes 24 weeks of technical training; e) successfully complete all required examinations; and f) pay all prescribed fees.
